Don’t lie about your skills and abilities to get the sort of job you want. You’ll
find yourself lying to hide your incompetence. This will lead to a drop in self-
esteem and a dramatic rise in your stress levels. Wait until you have those
skills, and then get the job you want.
4. POSITIVE STRESS
You might think that, ideally, there should be no stress in your life. Think
again! Without something to motivate us and push us into action, we could so
easily lapse into a passive state in which we take no action whatsoever!
Remember that we have said stress is our reaction to some sort of change.
Where there is life, there is growth, and growth always involves change. A
person who is without stress is without a challenge and without challenges
they are unlikely to push themselves. It is only through pushing ourselves can
we ever succeed in achieving our goals. Unchallenged people are
unmotivated people, whereas challenged people are excited, ready for action
and motivated.
Let’s examine how you can create positive stress in your life:
Envision your future
At the beginning of this course, the focus was on creating a mission
statement, a vision of what you ultimately want to achieve in each and every
area of your life. Identify with your goals and visions! If you have an exciting
and challenging vision and you can imagine it as a reality, and can picture
yourself as you will be when that vision has been realised, the drawing power
of this vision will act as a source of positive stress. It will motivate you into
taking action and into seeing change as the chance for the personal growth
and development necessary to reach your goals.
